Reading Time (Hours & Half-Hours)

Learn to read analog and digital clocks for whole hours and half-hours

Clock ReadingHoursHalf-HoursDaily Routines

Key Concepts

Master the fundamentals of reading time on clocks

Clock Structure

Understanding the parts of a clock: hour hand (short and thick), minute hand (long and thin), and numbers 1-12 around the face.

Examples:

Hour hand points to the hour
Minute hand points to the minutes
Numbers 1-12 are arranged in a circle
12 is at the top, 6 is at the bottom

Reading Whole Hours

When the minute hand points to 12, the hour hand shows the time. Read as 'X o'clock' or 'X:00'.

Examples:

Minute hand at 12, hour hand at 3 = 3:00 (three o'clock)
Minute hand at 12, hour hand at 7 = 7:00 (seven o'clock)
Minute hand at 12, hour hand at 12 = 12:00 (twelve o'clock)

Reading Half-Hours

When the minute hand points to 6, it's half past the hour. Read as 'X:30' or 'half past X'.

Examples:

Minute hand at 6, hour hand between 2 and 3 = 2:30 (half past two)
Minute hand at 6, hour hand between 8 and 9 = 8:30 (half past eight)
Minute hand at 6, hour hand between 11 and 12 = 11:30 (half past eleven)

Interactive Practice

Digital Clock Reading

Problem:

Read time from a digital clock display

Solution:

Digital clocks show time as numbers separated by a colon

Steps:

  1. 1Look at the numbers before the colon - this is the hour
  2. 2Look at the numbers after the colon - this is the minutes
