A clock has important parts! The FACE shows numbers 1-12 around a circle. The SHORT hand is the HOUR hand - it tells what hour it is. The LONG hand is the MINUTE hand - it tells the minutes. Understanding the parts helps you read time!

The Clock Face
Round circle with numbers 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12 going around. Like a circle of friends!
Hour Hand (Short)
The SHORT, fat hand. It moves slowly and points to the hour. When it points to 3, it's 3 o'clock!
Minute Hand (Long)
The LONG, thin hand. It moves faster and shows minutes. When pointing up at 12, it's o'clock time!
Numbers Around
The 12 is at top, 6 at bottom, 3 on right, 9 on left. They help us tell time!
Confusing which hand is which! Remember: SHORT hand = HOUR, LONG hand = MINUTE!
O'clock means EXACTLY on the hour! When the LONG hand points straight up at 12 and the SHORT hand points to a number, that's o'clock time! We say '3 o'clock' or '7 o'clock.' Super easy once you know the trick!

3 O'Clock
Long hand points to 12 (straight up), short hand points to 3. It's 3:00 or 3 o'clock!
7 O'Clock
Long hand at 12, short hand at 7. Time for dinner! It's 7:00 or 7 o'clock!
12 O'Clock
Both hands point straight up at 12! It's noon (lunchtime) or midnight (bedtime). 12:00!
9 O'Clock
Long hand up at 12, short hand points left to 9. Maybe bedtime! 9 o'clock!
Reading the hour hand when it's BETWEEN numbers. At o'clock, it points DIRECTLY at the number!
Half past means 30 MINUTES after the hour! The LONG hand points straight down at 6 (halfway around), and the SHORT hand is halfway between two numbers. We say 'half past 2' or '2:30'!
💡 Think of half past as halfway through the hour - like being halfway through eating your sandwich!
Half Past 3 (3:30)
Long hand points down at 6, short hand between 3 and 4. It's 3:30 or half past 3!
Half Past 6 (6:30)
Long hand at 6 (bottom), short hand between 6 and 7. Evening time! 6:30!
Half Past 12 (12:30)
Long hand at 6, short hand between 12 and 1. Afternoon starting! 12:30!
Half Past 8 (8:30)
Long hand at 6, short hand between 8 and 9. Getting close to bedtime! 8:30!

There are TWO types of clocks! ANALOG clocks have hands that move around a circle. DIGITAL clocks show numbers like 7:00 or 3:30. Both show the same time, just in different ways!

Analog Clock
Round clock with moving hands. You read by looking at where the hands point. Traditional style!
Digital Clock

Same Time, Different Look
Analog shows hands at 5 and 12. Digital shows 5:00. Same time, different display!
Where You See Them

Thinking digital clocks are 'better' or 'easier.' Both are important to learn!
The same clock time happens TWICE each day! 7:00 happens in the morning (7 AM - breakfast time) and evening (7 PM - dinner time). We use context to know which one!

7:00 AM (Morning)
Time to wake up and get ready for school! The sun is rising. Good morning!
7:00 PM (Evening)
Dinner time! The sun is setting. Evening activities begin!
3:00 PM (Afternoon)
School might be getting out! Snack time! Still daylight outside!
8:00 PM (Night)
Getting close to bedtime! Dark outside. Time to wind down!

To read time: First look at the SHORT hand for the hour. Then look at the LONG hand. If long hand is at 12, say 'o'clock.' If at 6, say 'half past' or '30.' Follow this pattern every time!
