Understanding Integers

Integers include positive numbers, negative numbers, and zero. They extend the number line in both directions.

Example 1: Adding Integers

Solve: -8 + 5

Solution:

Start at -8 on the number line. Move 5 units to the right.

-8 + 5 = -3

Example 2: Subtracting Integers

Solve: -4 - (-7)

Solution:

Subtracting a negative is the same as adding: -4 - (-7) = -4 + 7

Start at -4, move 7 units right: -4 + 7 = 3

Example 3: Multiplying Integers

Solve: -6 × 3

Solution:

Multiplying different signs results in negative: -6 × 3 = -18

Rule: positive × negative = negative, negative × positive = negative, negative × negative = positive

Key Rules:
  • Addition: Add numbers with the same sign, sign remains unchanged; subtract numbers with different signs, take the sign of the number with the larger absolute value
  • Subtraction: Subtracting a number is equivalent to adding its opposite
  • Multiplication/Division: Same signs result in positive, different signs result in negative
  • Real-world applications: Temperature changes, altitude, account balance, etc.
