Addition & Subtraction Concepts

Learn the fundamental concepts of addition and subtraction through visual representations and real-world scenarios

Concept LearningReal-world ScenariosVisual ToolsInteractive Practice

Key Concepts

Master the fundamental ideas behind addition and subtraction

Addition Concepts

Addition means combining or adding to. When we add, we put things together to find the total.

Examples:

3 red blocks + 2 blue blocks = 5 blocks total
6 birds on a tree + 2 more birds fly in = 8 birds total
4 apples + 3 more apples = 7 apples total

Subtraction Concepts

Subtraction means taking away or comparing. When we subtract, we remove some or find the difference.

Examples:

9 cookies - 2 eaten = 7 cookies left
10 candies - 4 given away = 6 candies left
8 toys - 3 broken = 5 toys working

Visual Representations

We can use pictures, objects, and drawings to help us understand addition and subtraction.

Examples:

Drawing circles or dots to represent objects
Using blocks or counters to show the problem
Making number lines to count up or down

Interactive Practice

Practice identifying and solving addition and subtraction problems

Addition Scenarios

Practice identifying when to use addition in real-world situations.

Activity: Look at pictures and choose the correct addition problem

Subtraction Scenarios

Practice identifying when to use subtraction in real-world situations.

Activity: Look at pictures and choose the correct subtraction problem

Visual Problem Solving

Use visual tools to solve addition and subtraction problems.

Activity: Drag objects to create and solve problems

Example Library

See how addition and subtraction work in different situations

Addition Example: Combining

Problem:

Sarah has 4 red marbles and 3 blue marbles. How many marbles does she have in all?

Solution:

4 + 3 = 7 marbles

Visual:

4 red circles + 3 blue circles = 7 circles total

Addition Example: Adding To

Problem:

There are 5 birds on a branch. 2 more birds land on the branch. How many birds are there now?

Solution:

5 + 2 = 7 birds

Visual:

5 birds + 2 more birds = 7 birds total

Subtraction Example: Taking Away

Problem:

Tom has 8 stickers. He gives 3 stickers to his friend. How many stickers does Tom have left?

Solution:

8 - 3 = 5 stickers

Visual:

8 stickers - 3 given away = 5 stickers left

Subtraction Example: Comparing

Problem:

Lisa has 7 toys. Her brother has 4 toys. How many more toys does Lisa have?

Solution:

7 - 4 = 3 more toys

Visual:

7 toys - 4 toys = 3 more toys
