🍕 Parts of a Whole

A fraction shows part of a whole. It has two numbers that tell us how many parts we have out of the total equal parts.

3 / 4

Numerator (3): parts we have

Denominator (4): total equal parts

💡 Remember: The denominator tells us into how many equal parts the whole is divided. The numerator tells us how many of those parts we're talking about!

📝 Example

A pizza cut into 8 slices. You eat 3 slices.

You ate 3/8 of the pizza (3 out of 8 slices).

Visual: 🍕🍕🍕🍕🍕 (3 eaten) | 🍕🍕🍕🍕🍕 (5 left)

Real-world: Fractions are everywhere - half an hour (1/2), a quarter of a dollar (1/4), three-fourths of a cup (3/4)!

🎯 Unit Fractions

A unit fraction has 1 as the numerator: 1/2, 1/3, 1/4, 1/5, etc. These are the building blocks of all fractions!
