A 28-year-old man, 5’10” (177.8 cm), 170 lb (77.1 kg), training 4×/week: BMR = 10(77.1) + 6.25(177.8) − 5(28) + 5 = 771 + 1,111 − 140 + 5 = 1,747 kcal. Moderately active multiplier ×1.55 → TDEE = 2,708 kcal/day. The same person with a desk job and no training (×1.2) burns just 2,096 — a 600-calorie difference that dwarfs any formula error, which is why the multiplier, not the equation, is where estimates go wrong.

Deficits, Surpluses, and Rate of Change

Using ~3,500 kcal per pound of body weight: a 500 kcal/day deficit ≈ 1 lb/week; the moderate −10% cut from the table (~270 kcal at this TDEE) ≈ 0.5 lb/week. How do I pick the right activity multiplier?
Count only genuine, regular activity: 1.2 desk job + no exercise, 1.375 for 1-3 weekly workouts, 1.55 for 3-5, 1.725 for 6-7, 1.9 for manual labor plus training. Most people overshoot by one level — when unsure, pick the lower one and adjust after 2-3 weeks of scale data.
Why am I not losing weight eating below my calculated TDEE?
The formula is a population average with ±10% individual spread, food logging typically undercounts by 10-20%, and TDEE itself falls as you lose weight (smaller body + adaptive thermogenesis). Trust your own 3-week trend over any calculator: if weight is flat, your true TDEE is your current average intake.
How is TDEE different from BMR?
BMR is the calories burned at complete rest — organs, breathing, temperature regulation. TDEE adds everything else you do. Eating below BMR isn't inherently dangerous for short periods, but sustained very-low intakes make adherence and micronutrition the limiting problems; most evidence-based cuts sit at TDEE −10-25%.
