A weighted grade multiplies each score by how much it counts, then divides by the total weight: Σ(score × weight) ÷ Σ(weight). Worked example for a typical syllabus — homework 20%, midterm 30%, final 50%, with scores 92, 84, and 88: 92×20 = 1,840; 84×30 = 2,520; 88×50 = 4,400. Sum: 8,760. Divide by the total weight (100): 87.6% — a B+. Note the unweighted average of the same three scores is 88.0%; the weighted result is lower because the midterm (the weakest score) counts more than homework.
Before the final exists, your graded work covers only part of the course, and dividing by 100 would understate your grade. Suppose homework (20%) is at 92 and the midterm (30%) at 84, and the 50% final hasn’t happened: the correct current standing is (1,840 + 2,520) ÷ 50 = 87.2%, not 43.6%. The calculator always divides by the weights you actually entered, so a mid-semester check is just “leave the future rows empty.” The same normalization handles point-based courses where weights total 500 or 1,000.
Weights tell you where a point of effort is worth most. In the example above, raising your homework average by 5 points lifts the course grade by 5 × 0.20 = 1.0 point — but 5 more points on the final adds 5 × 0.50 = 2.5. A weight is a multiplier on every point you gain or lose in that category. That’s also why a bad quiz in a 10% category is rarely fatal (its worst case costs a few course points) while an unprepared final in a 50% category can swing a full letter grade or more.
