What is a Quadrilateral?
Understanding four-sided polygons

A quadrilateral is any polygon with exactly four sides, four vertices (corners), and four interior angles. The word comes from Latin: “quadri” (four) + “latus” (side).

Key Property:

The sum of interior angles in any quadrilateral is always 360°. This is true for all quadrilaterals, regardless of shape.

A+B+C+D=360°\angle A + \angle B + \angle C + \angle D = 360°

Learning Objectives

  • Define quadrilaterals and identify their key properties (four sides, four vertices, four angles).
  • Recognize and classify rectangles, squares, parallelograms, and trapezoids.
  • Calculate perimeter and area for each quadrilateral type.
  • Understand the relationship hierarchy between quadrilateral types.
  • Apply quadrilateral properties to solve real-world problems.
  • Identify quadrilaterals in everyday objects and architecture.

Key Formulas

Rectangle

P=2(l+w)P = 2(l + w)

A=l×wA = l \times w

Square

P=4sP = 4s

A=s2A = s^2

Parallelogram

P=2(a+b)P = 2(a + b)

A=b×hA = b \times h

Trapezoid

A=12(a+b)hA = \frac{1}{2}(a + b)h
