3 hours 15 minutes: 60 MCQs in 90 min (50%), then 7 FRQs in 105 min (50%) — three long questions worth 10 points each and four short questions worth 4 points each (46 points total). A scientific calculator is allowed throughout. Worked example: 40/60 MCQ with FRQs of 7+6+5 (long) and 3+3+2+2 (short) = 28/46 → composite = 33.3 + 30.4 = 63.8% ≈ a 4, three points under the estimated 5 line. One long-FRQ part reclaimed (a 2-point equilibrium setup) plus two MCQs closes it — that's the typical margin at the top of this exam.
Post-2019 AP Chem consistently awards points for reasoning at the particle level: when a question shows beakers of ions or asks “draw/explain at the particulate level,” the point requires naming the actual species and interaction (“the highly charged Al³⁺ attracts the δ⁻ oxygen of water more strongly than Na⁺ does”), not the macroscopic observation.
