How the Exam Is Structured

3 hours 15 minutes: 60 MCQs in 90 min (50%), then 7 FRQs in 105 min (50%) — three long questions worth 10 points each and four short questions worth 4 points each (46 points total). A scientific calculator is allowed throughout. Worked example: 40/60 MCQ with FRQs of 7+6+5 (long) and 3+3+2+2 (short) = 28/46 → composite = 33.3 + 30.4 = 63.8% ≈ a 4, three points under the estimated 5 line. One long-FRQ part reclaimed (a 2-point equilibrium setup) plus two MCQs closes it — that's the typical margin at the top of this exam.

The Particulate-Diagram Rule

Post-2019 AP Chem consistently awards points for reasoning at the particle level: when a question shows beakers of ions or asks “draw/explain at the particulate level,” the point requires naming the actual species and interaction (“the highly charged Al³⁺ attracts the δ⁻ oxygen of water more strongly than Na⁺ does”), not the macroscopic observation. What happened to AP Chem scores in 2023?
College Board's standard-setting realignment hit AP Chem in 2023: the pass rate jumped from 54.0% (2022) to 75.1% (2023) and the mean from 2.73 to 3.26, then held through 2025. Prep materials with pre-2023 score charts will materially underestimate today's scores.
Which FRQ points are easiest to secure?

How many MCQs can I miss and still get a 5?
With a strong FRQ day (32/46 ≈ 70%), the estimated 5 line allows about 38/60 MCQ — missing 22. With an average FRQ performance (23/46 = 50%), you'd need 50/60. The FRQ section is where 5s are made; the MCQ section is where they're protected.
Is AP Chem the hardest science AP?
Not anymore by pass rate: 77.9% (2025) beats AP Bio's 70.4% and AP Physics 1's 67.4%. But its cohort is heavily self-selected — most students take it after honors chemistry. Content-wise its mix of conceptual particulate-level reasoning and multi-step calculation is still widely considered the heaviest workload of the three.
