3 hours: 60 MCQs in 90 min (50%), then 6 FRQs in 90 min (50%) — two long questions (8-10 points each) on experimental design and data analysis, plus four 4-point short questions. Worked example: 40/60 MCQ (66.7%) with 55% of FRQ points → composite = 33.3 + 27.5 = 60.8% ≈ a 4, about two points below the estimated 5 line. On a 34-point FRQ set, that gap is one more 'explain' point per long question — the difference between naming a result and giving its mechanism.
The long FRQs anchor on a figure — and rubric points go to statements that cite it: quote the actual values (“enzyme activity fell from 42 to 18 units between pH 6 and 8”), name the trend, then connect it to mechanism. Error bars appear most years: if the bars overlap, the difference is not statistically convincing — one sentence worth one point.
