3 hours 15 minutes: 45 MCQs in 60 min (45%), then three essays in 2 hours 15 min (55%) — synthesis, rhetorical analysis, and argument, each scored 0-6 on a rubric (1 thesis + 4 evidence/commentary + 1 sophistication). Worked example: 33/45 MCQ and essays of 4 + 4 + 3 = 11/18 → composite = 33/45×45 + 11/18×55 = 33.0 + 33.6 = 66.6% ≈ a 4. The essay side moves in big steps — one extra rubric point is worth ~3.1% of the whole exam, about the same as 3 MCQs — so a single improved commentary paragraph outweighs an hour of MCQ drilling.
AP Lang is the rare AP where writing outweighs multiple choice. A student scoring 80% on MCQ but averaging 3/6 essays lands at 63.5% (a 4, barely); flip the strengths — 60% MCQ with 4.5/6 essays — and the composite is 68.5%, comfortably closer to the 5 line. The three thesis points (one per essay) are the cheapest 9% on the exam: a defensible, specific claim in the first paragraph earns each one.
