The standard time-card method has three steps: (1) convert clock-in and clock-out to elapsed time, (2) subtract unpaid breaks, (3) sum the days with base-60 carrying. Example week: Monday–Thursday 8:30 AM–5:00 PM with a 30-minute lunch (8 h each), Friday 8:30 AM–1:30 PM with no lunch (5 h). Total: 4 × 8 + 5 = 37 hours = 37.00 decimal hours; at $20/hour that's $740 gross.

A “full-time” US job is typically 40 hours; the common European standard is 35–38 hours.
Payroll systems multiply decimal hours by the wage, so 7 h 45 min is entered as 7.75, not 7.45. US employers may round punches to the nearest quarter hour (the “7-minute rule”: 7:53–8:07 rounds to 8:00) as long as rounding doesn't systematically favor the employer. If your paycheck seems short, compare your own time-card total from this calculator against the payroll statement — punch-rounding and missed break deductions are the two most common discrepancies.
